Fantastic Slumber

Fantastic Slumber Illustrated Emma Dooner

Medium: Ink Drawing
Size: 10″ x 14″
The inspiration for this piece came from my pet cat who acted as a model for the illustration. He was sleeping in front of me, so I settled down with a sketch pad and scribbled down his likeness.

On the left is my original sketch. On the right is the finished illustration.

I felt the bird works well in the illustration to set a serene and peaceful mood. Originally the background was to be simple. I did not want the piece to be too busy. However, as I started working on the grass I liked the life-like look created by the extreme detail.

In the beginning: the process of illustrating the grass.
Illustrating the grass. Three quarters complete.

The more delicate and refined the details in the piece became the more it seemed to breathe and come to life in front of me. The starry sky took the longest to complete. I drew each star and then filled in the spaces between them with black ink.

This is how it looked when I first started working on the night sky. I had no idea what I was in for at this point.
Day 2 of stars 🌟
Day 3 of stars ✨
Day 4 of stars ✨ 🌟
Day 5 of stars 🌟 There is light at the end if the tunnel at this point.

It took a long time to complete but I am happy with how it turned out.

In my work I can create my own world of peace. That is something that I just cannot live without.
I hope you enjoy my work.
